Web 2.0 and the Future of the Internet

For the uninitiated, Wikipedia's defintion of Web 2.0 is "a perceived second-generation of Web-based services--such as social networking sites, wikis, communication tools, and folksonomies--that emphasize online collaboration and sharing among users." The biggest names are probably YouTube and MySpace boasting millions of members sharing files and communicating every day. New companies like Free IQ and Friendster look to make their mark in this highly profitable and growing internet field.

So what do these sites mean for the internet marketer? One of the most powerful features is the "search" option which can let you narrow down a highly targeted group of people in seconds. This allows for near total freedom to market to any niche at any time as long as you have the time to set everything up to filter them where you want them to go first. Web 2.0 sites often take advantage of the newest and best internet technology using audio and video to drive people to their pages. This is a resource that can be capitalized on very quickly and easily by the savvy marketer.

These websites become multi-billion dollar businesses. BILLION. Google's buyout of YouTube is just a hint of what's possible to anyone who can even get a small piece of the pie. As these websites become more and more popular every day, more and more advertising chances became available if you're familiar with using the system and marketing to it's members. Depending on where you do market on Web 2.0 sites can be white hat or black hat, but will become a skill internet marketers will need to learn in the very near future to become and stay successful.
